The Netherlands prepares its frozen canals for the Eleven Cities ice skating marathon

The entire Netherlands is on a knife's edge this week, holding its breath to see whether a near-mythical ultra ice skating race on frozen canals will become a reality for the first time in 15 years. Dutch troops are joining a race against time to prepare ice for the legendary 125-mile (200 kilometre) race across frozen waterways in the northern Netherlands.

So cold in Amsterdam that the canals have started to freeze.
